Laser Printers Emit Potentially Hazardous Indoor Pollution,Study Says

Some home and office laser printers emit possibly harmful amounts of small-particle air pollution, Australian researchers find.

One of the printers gave off as much small-particle pollution as a burning cigarette, find Lidia Morawska, PhD, director of the International Laboratory for Air Quality and Health at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, Australia, and colleagues.

"By all means this is an important indoor source of pollution. There should be regulations," Morawska said in a news release.

The researchers tested 62 printers sold under the Canon, HP Color LaserJet, Ricoh, and Toshiba brand names. They measured particles given off by the printers under normal operating conditions in a large, open office setting with 22 desks. They also tested three of the printers in a closed chamber.

Seventeen of the printers emitted high levels of particles, while 37 released no particles at all. The differences were large. "Medium-emitter" printers gave off 100 times more particles than did "low-emitter" printers. "High-emitter" printers gave off 1,000 times more particles than did "low-emitter" printers.

So which printers should you avoid? It's not a simple question.

"While the printers were classified into different groups according to their emission levels, there are no obviously common features which printers in the individual groups share," Morawska said via email. "Printers by the same manufacturer — but of different model numbers — were both in the high- and low-emitting groups."

Under different circumstances — such as toner coverage and cartridge age — the same printer might give off different levels of pollution. For example, the HP LaserJet 5 printer tested as a nonemitter in one test, and as a high emitter in another.

The very fine particles emitted by laser printers could be a problem, as such small particles can be inhaled deep into the lungs.

"Even very small concentrations can be related to health hazards. Where the concentrations are significantly elevated, there is potentially a considerable hazard," Morawska said.

Depending on the ventilation conditions of a room or office, the particles emitted by a laser printer can disperse in a few minutes or hand in the air for hours, Morawska said.

She advises people who use laser printers to keep their offices well ventilated. She also suggested that people not sit too close to working printers.

"The closer to the sources — in this case the printer — the higher hazard, as the concentrations are higher," Morawska warned.

The researchers note that the complex particle-emission patterns of laser printers is "still far from being completely understood" and that further study is needed.

The findings appear in the Aug. 1 online edition of the American Chemical Society journal, Environmental Science & Technology.

Computers and Your Eyes

by Orlin Sorensen

One of the most common requests we get here at Rebuild Your Vision is for information about PC use and vision. And it's no wonder-almost all of us use a computer at least once in a while, and many of us sit in front of the magic box all day! In fact, the University of Iowa's Christine Sindt, O.D., estimates that Computer Vision Syndrome- or the "complex of eye and vision problems related to near work that are experienced during or related to computer use" as the American Optometric Association defines CVS – affects 75% of the people who work on computers, most markedly those over the age of 40.

If you've experienced any of the 14 symptoms listed below, you'll want to read on for information on how to combat CVS.

The American Optometric Association's 14 Symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome

1. tired eyes
2. eyestrain
3. sore eyes
4. periodic blurred near vision
5. occasional blurred distance vision
6. headaches
7. dry eyes
8. slowness in changing the focus of your eyes
9. red eyes
10. burning eyes
11. contact lens discomfort
12. changes in color perception
13. glare sensitivity
14. excessive tearing

Obviously, the easiest way to prevent CVS is to stop using the computer! But, as that is simply not an option for the millions of us (including this writer) who make a living performing computer-related tasks, here are 5 tips to help you monitor your natural monitors: your eyes.

1. Make sure your workstation, whether on the job or at home, is set up ergonomically

"Ergonomics" is just a fancy way of saying "Being kind to your body." But as we know, being good to your body every day will benefit you in the long run. Repositioning your monitor is an easy and effective way to avoid awkward head or eye movements. As Dr. Ergo (aka Dr. James Sheedy) notes on his Web site, "Because the eyes lead the body, your body will assume whatever position is required to enable your eyes to see comfortably. A poorly located computer screen causes awkward body positions." He notes that a viewing distance of 20-28 inches is most common.

He also says that the center of the computer screen should be 4-
9 inches below your eyes, because your eyes work best with a slight downward gaze. Your computer screen and other work (and your phone, if that's part of your office) should be located straight in front of you so that you don't have to look sideways or twist your body or neck to see them.

2. Eliminate glare in your work area

Glare is an all-too-common cause of eyestrain and eye fatigue. Modifying your office lighting will eliminate glare and harsh reflections. First, find the source of the glare: Is it coming from a window, task light, or the screen itself (see #3 below)?

If possible, remove the offending source of light. Adjust blinds or curtains to minimize sunlight. Turn down overhead lights so that the brightness of the screen and the surrounding room are balanced. Do not, however, work in the dark: the contrast between computer-generated light and lack of background light strains the eyes. Task lights should be positioned to provide direct light for reading and other office work, but should not shine directly on the computer or in your eyes. You may need to use a low-wattage bulb.

You may also need to move your desk so that bright overhead lights or windows are not in your field of view. The best position for your desk is directly to the side of a window/overhead light. That way you can still enjoy some natural light without glare (caused by brightness in front of your field of vision) or reflections (caused by brightness behind you).

Another option is to use a monitor glare hood, or better yet, a screen. Look for anti-reflection screens that have been approved by the American Optometric Association.

3. Adjust your screen

Dr. Ergo notes, "Optimal contrast and visibility are attained with black characters on a white background. However, other combinations can be comfortable so long as the brightness contrast between the characters and the background is high. It is best to avoid dark backgrounds."

You can also adjust your brightness/contrast controls, and use a larger text size, as display legibility is an important factor in visual performance. For most, the size of the text should be three times the size of the smallest text you can read.

An article on "Flat-Panel Monitors Versus CRTs" in the magazine PC World says that "flat panel (LCD) displays have visual advantages compared to cathode ray tube (CRT) displays. They do not flicker and the contrast is typically higher." And because CRTs deteriorate gradually over time, you may not even realize that the picture you are looking at today is not the same one you were looking at five years ago when you bought the monitor-although this deterioration may be causing your CVS symptoms. Consider an upgrade.

4. Take a break

It's easy to lose track of time at the computer. Always remember the 10-10-10 rule and at the very minimum take a break at least once an hour for about 10 minutes and blink frequently — video display use is associated with a decreased frequency of blinking. (And a computer break is a perfect excuse to perform your Vision for Life eye exercises.) Computer use can also cause an increased rate of tear evaporation.

5. Stay healthy

Although you can relieve dry, itchy eyes with artificial tears from the drugstore or supermarket, it's best not to rely on them. A better way to prevent dryness is to stay hydrated with good old-fashioned H2O. Of course, eating your beta-carotine-rich foods is always good for maintaining eye health, and a Japanese study suggests that supplementation with the amino acid taurine appears to alleviate vision fatigue. Contact lens wearers may want to switch to glasses during PC work, as contact lenses themselves can cause dry eyes.

How to Use

There are five products in all. The regular soap is used for cleaning (see Instructions) or bathing. If you have normal to oily skin you would use this soap to bathe. The moisturizing soap is used for bathing when you have dry skin. The neutralizer is the water additive, but can also be sprayed on the skin. It cleanses and detoxifies your body. The neutralizer gel has a better consistency for topical use and heals cuts, bruises and burns. It is the same product as the neutralizer, it is also four times more potent only in gel form. Finally, the moisturizer has the neutralizer as a base along with natural oils to keep those dry areas moisturized.

How does the soap work?
The soap carries a negative electrical charge (most soaps are Ph balanced) which causes your pores to open! It is then able to penetrate your skin and wash out bacteria and toxins which can cause problems if not eliminated properly. This negative charge also washes away toxins internally such as any electropositive substance: metals, bacteria, yeast, etc…

How do I use the soap?
Apply about a nickel sized drop on your washcloth and lather your entire body. As a shampoo, use a small amount. The soap is highly concentrated and is better diluted with water. The moisturizer works great as a hair conditioner, so the moisturizing soap is amazing as a shampoo! It also makes a wonderful bubble bath (very concentrated – doesn't take much) and is great for the kids to soak in! The longer they soak (and play in the tub out of your hair a few minutes), the better for their skin!!

Are the ingredients natural?
Yes, the ingredients are all natural. See our Products section for details about the product and its chemistry. Miracle II does not contain petroleum by-products or animal fat.

Miracle II Soap:
People with oily skin sometimes prefer to bathe with the regular Miracle II Soap using the same amount as discussed above. This regular soap will also replace all your household cleaners. (See More Suggested Uses for Miracle II )

Miracle II Moisturizing Soap: (Shake Well Before Using to Blend Moisturizer and Soap) If you forget to shake the bottle and pour the lotion off first, you can always add more Miracle II Skin Moisturizer back into the bottle of soap. Normally there are about 2 ounces of lotion in a 22ounce bottle of soap. Used for bathing and shampooing for people with normal to dry skin. If you have oily skin, you may prefer to use regular Miracle II Soap without moisturizing lotion. Since this soap is very concentrated, you may use any amount you wish, bearing in mind no need to be wasteful. Most people use about ½ ounce per bath. If you have a whirlpool bath, you will need even less soap.

Miracle II Neutralizer: (Keep out of direct sunlight)
• Can be swallowed full strength or mixed with another liquid if you desire.
• Will help to raise the pH level of the body.
• Used for feminine douches.
• Used to spray on skin conditions, rashes, burns, bruises, abrasions or joint.
• Using ½ ounce in bath water along with the Miracle II soap will further increase benefits.
• Used to cook in foods. (helps with the effects of beans!).
• Used to clean fruits and vegetables.

Miracle II Neutralizer Gel: (Keep out of direct sunlight)
• Brush your teeth (apply on toothbrush as you would toothpaste and add one drop of the regular Miracle II Soap). The soap gives the foaming action. This will clean your mouth and teeth better than anything you have ever used.
• Apply topically to any area of the body for: skin conditions, cuts, bruises, warts, moles, age spots, abrasions, rashes, itching, poison ivy or oak, skin cancers, wrinkles, hemorrhoids, tumors, joints, any area where you experience pain and can also be used as an after shave conditioner. Neutralizer Gel can be followed up with the Miracle II Skin Moisturizer to enhance benefits. Also, people have found that wrapping the affected area with a plastic wrap helps keep the electrical charge focused on the area and brings greater benefit. You may use Handi-Wrap or a plastic bag loosely wrapped overnight.
• Apply to gums for toothaches.
• May also be used for any internal body cavity.

Miracle II Skin Moisturizer:
• Used for all over body moisturizing.
• Used for after shave conditioner for men.
• Used for face moisturizing.
• Used for wrinkles and blemishes (apply gel and then follow with skin moisturizer).

The body gets loaded down with toxins from the many foods we eat that have been sprayed with all kinds of poisons. The toxins go into the body and they cannot get out because the pores of the skin are stopped up from the many oils and soap that are made from animal fat. Miracle II Soap is the only body cleanser that will clean all the sweaty, waxy residue from the pores of the face, body and scalp. When this happens, the body works the way God made it to work, to detoxify itself. When toxins cannot get out of the body, these toxins settle in the joints and it is called arthritis, which leads to many other problems.

The inside of the body gets coated with additives, fillers, dyes, yeast and acids in the food that we eat. They coat the stomach walls like syrup on a plate. Many of the nutrients that are in the food cannot get through the walls of the stomach. We have to eat more food to satisfy what the body needs. This creates many problems for people. But by brushing your teeth with Miracle II Neutralizer it neutralizes all the toxins in the stomach and cleans the walls of the stomach, so food can be processed the way it is supposed to be. You will have more energy, the whitest teeth, and the healthiest mouth that you possibly could have.

When you use the soap and neutralizer, yeast acids and toxins are removed or stabilized in the body, so the immune system works the way God made it to work.

To have a healthier body and mind, you must change what you wash your body, hair and clothing with. Get away from animal fat, alcohol, and petroleum bar soap products. Try Miracle II products for yourself. You will see and feel the difference.

• Contains 100% Active Ingredients
• Most Potent Anti-Adherence Substance
• Naturally Occurring in Food (very safe)
• Safe For Long Term Use
• 100% Non-Toxic and Neutral pH

Much in the same way cranberry works, ClearTract interferes with the ability for the bacteria to cling. This is sometimes called the "anti-adherence effect". ClearTract takes this effect to a whole new level and accomplishes more than cranberry has ever been able to achieve. ClearTract is the most potent anti-adherence action product to date. ClearTract uses a simple but rare sugar called D-Mannose.

D-Mannose is naturally occurring in peaches, apples and certain berries. This rare sugar has unique characteristics that differ from most sugars as it is not metabolized nor is there any insulin response to it when consumed. Instead, it is rapidly excreted into the urinary tract. Once inside the urinary tract ClearTract goes to work binding to bacteria and disabling their ability to stick. If the bacteria is unable to stick they can't colonize and multiply and are simply flushed out of the system.

The ingredients are 100% D-Mannose, which is a rare saccharide that is naturally occurring in some plant and food substances and even produced in the body. It has no toxicity and is not a drug, it is a nutritional food substance. It is safe, and all natural. Since it isn't metabolized it doesn't interfere with blood sugar regulation, even for diabetics. It creates no disruption or imbalance in normal body microflora, so one wouldn't be more prone to yeast infections as is often the case after a course of antibiotics. It's safe even for pregnant women and very small children.

Caution: Pregnant or lactating women, diabetics, hypoglycemics, and people with known medical conditions and/or taking drugs should always consult with a licensed physician and/or pharmacist prior to taking dietary supplements.

If The Bacteria Can't Stick, They Can't Stay

Recent research from the Weizmann Institute of Science indicates that there is another approach to dealing with infections. The majority of infectious diseases are initiated by adhesion of pathogenic organisms to the tissues of the host. Bacterial adherence to mucosa is an initial and important stage to cause urinary tract infection. Recent Studies show that certain compounds recognized by the bacterial lectins block the adhesion of the bacteria to the binding cells. This blocks adhesion and colonization. The result is that the bacteria can't stay and are simply flushed out of the system.

D-Mannose Makes the Bacteria Very Slippery

D-Mannose is a unique carbohydrate molecule that possesses two unique properties. The first important property is that when consumed orally it is not metabolized like other carbohydrates and instead is excreted by the kidneys into the urine. Secondly, once it is in the urine it has a high affinity to the bacteria lectins that are used to adhere to the urinary tract lining. Once these receptors are filled the bacteria can’t bind to the urinary tract wall preventing colonization and are simply flushed out of the system.

ClearTract Contains 100% D-Mannose

ClearTract is a nutritional supplement that contains 100% D-Mannose.
D-Mannose is not a drug, it is a nutritional supplement and is naturally occurring in peaches, apples, berries and even produced in the body. It is safe for all ages and nontoxic.

Dosage Information:

For maximum support take 1 scoop (scoop included) up to 5 times daily for first 3-4 days or as needed. For those with frequent problems an optional single daily dose can be used to maintain a healthy urinary tract. How to take

The slightly sweet powder mixes well in just about any beverage. However it is important to get plenty of liquids to ensure frequent urination, so 6-8oz. of water is recommended.

Prostate problems are quite typical in men over the age of 40, and as you get older, it is important to think about ways to maintain the health of your prostate. More then 50% of men over 50 have prostate problems, so don't think you're alone in this.

The most common problem associated with the prostate is enlargement of the prostate itself. This results in a narrowing of the urethra and can lead to many different urinary problems including the need to urinate three to four times a night, trouble in urinating, and painful urination. The medical term for this condition is "benign prostatic hyperplasia" (BPH). It's not life threatening, but it sure can make your life miserable. Luckily BPH is often treatable with natural herbal preparations like our Adam's Prostate Care Cream. Adam's Prostate Care is made up of many different beneficial herbs. The cream is very easy to apply. All you need to do is to massage a small amount (1/4 of a teaspoon) into your skin each day. It's also great as a moisturizing cream on your face after you shave. One two- ounce tube will last approximately two months.

Adam's Prostate Care Ingredients & Their Functions

Adam's Prostate Care with 600mg of Natural Progesterone
• An All-Natural Solution For Men
• A Unique Herbal Blend Body Cream For Men
• Formulated Specifically To Aid The Male Prostate

Saw Palmetto Berries
Acts as a diuretic and urinary antiseptic. Stimulates the appetite. Inhibits the production of dihydrotestosterone, a hormone that contributes to the enlargement of the prostate. Good for poor appetite and prostate disorders. May also enhance sexual functioning and desire.

Pygeum Africanum
A large evergreen tree native to Africa, where it has been used for a variety of health compliments. The purified fat-soluble extract of the bark of Pygeum Africanum has demonstrated clinical efficacy similar to the extract of saw palmetto. The mechanism of action appears to work via its inhibition of cholesterol uptake by the prostate, antagonizing testosterone, and reducing prostatic inflammation.

American Ginseng
Strengthens the adrenal and reproductive glands. Enhances immune function, promotes lung functioning, and stimulates the appetite. Useful for bronchitis, circulatory problems, diabetes, infertility, lack of energy and stress. Used by athletes for overall body strengthening.

Bearberry Extract
Acts as astringent, diuretic, and tonic. Bearberry helps to reduce accumulations of uric acid and to relieve the pain of bladder stones and gravel. Used to alleviate chronic cystitis. It may also help where bed-wetting is a problem.

Pumpkin Seed Oil
Contains B vitamins, essential fatty acids, protein and zinc. Useful for prostate disorders. Acts as anthelmintic. Pumpkin Seed Oil is also useful for healing wounds, especially burns and chapped skin.

Natural Progesterone
Derived from the Mexican wild yam root or soy. These sterols are processed through several fermentation steps to yield progesterone, which is identical to the progesterone produced by the human body. Adam's Equalizer uses only the dioscorea barbasco, which is the purest and most expensive form of natural progesterone.

Natural Vitamin C
Adam's Equalizer uses Ascorbic Acid from Malpighia punicifolia, the Acerola cherry. Vitamin C is a very powerful antioxidant that also protects other antioxidants, such as vitamin E. The cells of the brain and spinal cord, which frequently incur free radical damage, can be protected by significant amounts of a bioflavonoid called hesperidin. In addition to its role as an antioxidant, vitamin C detoxifies many harmful substances and plays a key role in immunity. It increased the synthesis of interferon; a natural antiviral substance produced by the body, and stimulates the activity of certain key immune cells.

OptiZink
Zinc is an essential mineral, which is important in the prostate gland function and growth of the reproductive organs. Zinc may help prevent acne and regulate the activity of oil glands. It is required for protein synthesis and collagen formation, and promotes a healthy immune system and the healing of wounds. Zinc also allows the acuity of taste and smell. It protects the liver from chemical damage and is vital for bone formation. It is a constituent of insulin and many vital enzymes. OptiZinc is the trademark of a form of zinc called zinc monomethionine (zinc bound with the amino acid methionine), which has been found to have antioxidant activity comparable to that of vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene.

Suggested Use:
Massage ¼ tsp. (one inch strip) twice a day to thin skin areas (scrotum, inside arms, wrist, ankles, chest and feet) three weeks of each month, then stop for 5 to 7 days. After three months reduce to 1/8 tsp (1/2 inch strip) twice a day.

Prostate Problems and Hormones

Testosterone is Only Part of the Picture
Some years back, a handful of men called or wrote to tell me of their experience with progesterone, usually the result of handling progesterone cream while helping a woman apply it. They reported that their symptoms of prostate enlargement or benign prostatichypertrophy (BPH) such as urinary urgency and frequency decreased considerably, and their sexual performance increased. Needles to say, this gave me much to think about.

Since then, several men with prostate cancer have told me their PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) level, an indication of prostate cancer, decreased when they started using a daily dab of progesterone cream, and that they have had no progression of their prostate lesions since using the cream. One man called to say his bone metastasises are now no longer visible by Mayo Clinic X-ray tests.

Though I retired from active practice ten years ago, six of my fat-met patients with early prostate cancer have been using progesterone cream (along with diet, some vitamin and mineral supplements, and saw palmetto) for about five years. All report their cancer has shown no progression.

The Wrong Treatment All These Years
Since Huggins showed, in 1941, that castration (removal of the testicles) slowed progression of prostate cancer, physicians have assumed it was the resulting lack of testosterone that slowed the cancer, and ever since have relied on suppression of testosterone in their treatment of the disease. However, the testosterone suppression benefit only lasts two to three years, and then the prostate cancer progression to an androgen (male hormone) insensitive state and continues to spread. Despite this metastatic prostate cancer patients are treated with androgen blockade through castration (orcheictomy) and/or hormone suppressing drugs.

I remember reading studies done 30 to 40 years ago showing that testosterone supplementation prevented survival of prostate cancer cells transplated to test mammals. In more recent (as yet unpublished) studies it has been shown that in a prostate cancer cell culture, testosterone kills the cancer cells. A 1996 study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences showed that in mice, testosterone will shrink human prostate tumors.

Tracking the Culprit
Why does prostate cancer occur so often in aging men? Consider the changes in testicular hormone production as men age:

1) Testosterone levels fall;
2) More testosterone is changed (by 5-alpha-reductase enzyme) to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), stimulating prostate growth;
3) Progesterone levels fall. Progesterone is vital to good health in men. It is the primary precursor of our adrenal cortical hormones and testosterone. Men sythesize progesterone in smaller amounts than women do but it is still vital. Since progesterone is a potent inhibitor of 5-alpha-reductase, the decline of progesterone in aging males play a roll in increasing the conversion rate of testosterone to DHT.
4) Estradiol (an estrogen) effect increases Testosterone is a direct antagonist of estradiol both the fall in Testosterone and the shift from testosterone to DHT allows increased effect of estradiol. Male estradiol levels are equivalent to or greater than that of postmenopausal females, but normally estradiols effects are suppressed (antagonized) by the male's greater production of testosterone. Perhaps estradiol is also the culprit (along with DHT) in prostate growth.
Getting Down to the Gene Level

Embryology teaches us that the prostate is the male equivalent of the female uterus. The two organs differentiate from the same embryonic cells and they share many of the same genes such as the oncogene, Bel-2 and the cancer-protector gene, p53. It is not surprising then, that the hormonal relationships in endometiral cancer will be the same in prostate cancer; that is both are very sensitive to the harmful effects of unopposed estrogen and are protected by progesterone. Researchers, T. S. Wiley and Brent Formby Ph.D., have done test tube studies that verify this relationship; but, human studies still need to be done.

The course of prostate cancer growth, like breast cancer growth, is not due to a linear progression of cancer cells multiplying from one rogue cell; it is due to the continued presence of an underlying metabolic imbalance. The underlying metabolic imbalance in all hormone-dependant cancers is estrogen dominance. Prevent the estrogen dominance and you will prevent the cancer. If the cancer is already underway, correcting the estrogen dominance will slow the cancer growth and prolong life. The benefit of castration in prostate cancer stemmed from estradiol reduction, not testosterone reduction. Given the choice, I would choose testosterone and progesterone supplementation over castration.
